There's a reason why you should always keep a pen and a notebook close to you. While traveling, note-taking is not what we could call a luxury (in my honest opinion).
First of all, written notes don't fade (at least, not instantly). You don't need to be worried about how long the battery will be lasting. A written travel journal seems to be the oldest and cheapest method to keep things organised.
Before starting my trip, there are several informations I like to keep close to me, like:
My flight information
Yes. It's always good to grab your notebook and check your travel information anytime you want. Leave some space on the first pages of your journal and write down your flight/train number, date and time. Missing your flight would be the last thing you would want to happen!
Hotel/hostel and local emergency telephone numbers
In case you get lost or have to change your reservation.
Things I would like to do on location
Everytime I find something that catches my eye, I instantly write it down. Why? Because I obviously don't want to forget anything and miss the opportunity for an interesting activity. Take time to read guides and online discussions about the places you're about to visit, it can save you a considerate amount of time!
Local transportation
On location, your journal can come in handy when you need to know about the basic transportation lines. Of course, there are several applications on your phone that can trace routes for you, but it's always good to have something on paper.
Once you've gathered all the necessary information and you're good to go, keep your journal up to date.
You may collect different things, such as notes, post cards, souvenirs, stamps, photos, tickets, sketches, anything you think is worth keeping.

Each entry of your journal doesn't have to be perfect, it only needs to reflect the thoughts you've had in each place you've visited. As for me, I want mine to take me back in time when I open it at home.
